Individuals or teams of up to 5 VIU students can submit their entry to the VIU Code-a-thon for Learning.

This video presents information about the overall goal for the mobile learning software we are developing in this code-a-thon. Using Xcode, programmers will be creating a Design & Learn app that allows educators at Deep Bay to create mobile learning (M-learning) activities at the field station for elementary students and other young visitors. Once the M-learning activities have been completed, the students will be able to share their learning with Deep Bay and educators from their school.

This video includes information that coders will need to participate in this event. Each individual participant or team will need their own laptop, copy of the software, and Github account. While Xcode was originally designed for Macintosh computers, it can be configured to run on Windows (see link in resources below). In addition to the Swift language, this software will use storyboards and the following elements coders might want to familiarize themselves with:

Participants will be using Xcode and Swift to create the mobile learning app for Deep Bay. Xcode and its associated emulator is available free from iTunes and can be accessed using the Xcode icon. Xcode can be configured for Windows at the following link:

Individuals and teams will be able to access examples of an earlier educational app and one possible design using storyboards in Xcode via our account on Github. These files will be published on May 12th for participants but you can learn more about Github by selecting the icon.
